Does your business culture promote a sense of belonging? 1

A sense of belonging is a deep intrinsic need within all of us. As human beings we cannot permanently operate solo or if we do, eventually we can find it isolating, lonely or demotivating. We instinctively need to feel part of something, to be included, and to feel as though we are adding value to ourselves, our teams or sometimes even to a greater cause.
Understanding this, if a business were to make an effort to encourage a feeling of belonging, would this impact on the business culture? I think it would, for the better.
Here are some ideas for you to think about to help you build a strong culture in your business, and to create a sense of belonging.

1. Shared values

People connect on many different levels, but one thing that can bind people and make them feel as though they belong and are part of a bigger purpose is to have a good understanding of the companies value system.
Sharing the company values with your team is essential. Clarifying why the business exists and which values underpin all decisions and actions, gives people purpose and confidence in their own actions. If they understand the business values, they can also measure or align their own personal values.
Being part of a collective, with shared common values brings a sense of belonging.

2. Feeling wanted

I don’t think I have ever met a person who doesn’t want to be wanted, needed or included. Yes, there will be different levels or intensities of this need, but at the end day – people want to feel wanted.
How can you achieve that in your business?
  • Be open to different cultures, religions, customs and lifestyles – this approach starts from the top. It’s okay to be different, to have a different language and different approaches.
  • Allow your team to voice their opinions and suggestions – there are always alternative ways to resolve a problem, so by giving people an opportunity to share their ideas – they feel valued. The more you ask for feedback and input, the more people will happily give it.
  • Celebrate wins – if team members are doing well, it creates a positive energy and a winning environment, and the desire to keep doing well. Reward in public and celebrate! No more tall poppy syndrome!
  • Have regular 1-2-1’s and check-ins with your team members. This way you get to know them, how they like to be managed. What motivates and de-motivates them. You also get an opportunity to find out about their families and hobbies. Take interest in your team and they will take interest in you and your business.
Knowing that you are needed by your team and by your boss brings a sense of belonging.

3. Being kind

When we show kindness to each other we also inadvertently show empathy, understanding and love. When we are kind to our team mates we automatically create a sense of belonging. Why? The act of kindness tells people that they matter.
How can you show kindness today?
Creating a sense of belonging within your business and team is an exceptionally powerful act and achievement. How would your team perform if they felt this sense of belonging?
